Where did you find us? Another player, though I feel like I stumbled across an ad somewhere...
Are you 16 years of age or older?: Yup

Name:
Utena Tenjo

Fandom: Revolutionary Girl Utena, the anime

Time Line: After the anime

Age:16

Powers/skills/equipment: Canonically: "The Power of Dios" This manifests when Utena is under high stress, usually during a fight of some kind, in which Utena's agility, physical and mental strength are temporarily heightened. This lasts until the fight has some sort of conclusion. She is a decent swordswoman and has a few self defense moves. She has no equipment to speak of, only her trademark jacket and rose signet ring that she thought she lost.

Canon History: When Utena was about eight, both her parents were killed in an accident and she was orphaned. Not wanting to live any more, she crawled into a coffin stating, "What's the point of living when everything dies?" A mysterious man, a prince, appeared, kissed her tears away and gave her the will to live, telling her he would always care for her, and the rose signet ring to find him again. The ring led her to Ohtori acadamy in where she subsequently enrolled. Utena took the prince’s words to heart and tried to remain a noble-hearted, good prince. Yes, a prince. Utena eschewed the role of princess in favor of the "true nobility" of a prince and the ability to save of lost souls like she once was. At Ohtori, dressed in the male uniform, Utena stumbled upon the Rose Bride Duels. She originally came upon them due to the cruel rejection of her friend Wakaba by the current Rose Bride owner Saionji. Challenging Saionji for his treatment of Wakaba, Utena is unwittingly drawn into a real duel, though she is only armed with a practice wooden kendo sword. Somehow (the power of Dios) Utena wins the duel and Anthy Himemiya, the girl she thought was Saionji's girlfriend. Anthy comes to stay in the same room as Utena and following her everywhere as they are now "engaged". Anthy also becomes the housekeeper and chef for Utena. Utena, uncomfortable with this arrangement, decides to throw the next duel, giving Anthy to the next duelist. However the duelist is Saionji trying to win back Anthy. Utena, after witnessing the harsh treatment that Saionji gave/gives Anthy decided that she would protect Anthy, becoming her prince.

Utena, now introduced to the Rose Bride Duels and the student council that participates in said duels, makes friends with a younger councilman, Miki. Miki develops a crush on Anthy which leads to a duel between the two. Utena prevails, then gets to duel the resident female prince - Juri. Winning that duel, and deepening her involvement with the Rose Bride contest, Utena develops an actual friendship with the mysterious Anthy and her small monkey companion Chuchu.

Throughout all this Utena has endured the constant attention of Touga, the student council president. This manipulative playboy wants the Rose Bride and he tries to get it by making Utena believe he was her prince all along. Initially he beats Utena, sending her into a spiral of self-doubt and angst. So much so that Utena stops wearing her trademark boy’s uniform, instead wearing the normal girl’s uniform and behaving weak and far more effeminate. An encounter between Wakaba, a friend of Utena’s not involved with the duels, and Anthy brings Utena back to her true princely self and she duels Touga one more time and wins.

Utena is then forced to defend Anthy from the Black Rose duelists, fighters created by exploiting their flaws and insecurities, and their leader Souji Mikage, who wishes to kill the Rose Bride and replace her with a person of his choosing. This pits Utena against new duelists, including her friend Wakaba. Utena prevails, saving Anthy from the Black Rose machinations.

Anthy’s cool older brother Akio is introduced and he immediately wins over Utena with his charms and princely demeanor, to the point that Utena sleeps with him and debates becoming his princess. While this relationship with Akio blooms the Rose Bride duels start again with the original duelists. None can overcome Utena’s bond with Anthy. As she and Anthy get closer and the duel cycle comes to an end, Utena discovers that the relationship of Anthy and Akio is more than brother-sister and that Anthy does truly dislike her role as Rose Bride and what goes with it. Though she feels betrayed by both, Utena goes to the final duel in which she confronts Akio, her illusionary prince from her childhood, and her own ability to be a prince. Utena still wants to free Anthy from her bonds but is unable to when Anthy herself stabs her in the back. Akio takes the Sword of Dios from her and tries to open the gate, behind which the power to revolutionizes the world resides. While he attempts this, Utena watches as Anthy is stabbed by thousands of swords, a repeated role for Anthy, being the Rose Bride. Akio gives up after shattering the sword but Utena finds a little strength left to attempt the gate. Tearing at it with her bare hands, Utena’s true intention of freeing Anthy are finally realized and the gate opens to reveal the rest of Anthy sealed away in a coffin. Utena struggles to open the coffin and to pull Anthy out. As this happens the world begins to fall apart, taking Anthy with it, leaving Utena to be the replacement for the swords’ hatred.

After all this, Utena just disappears from the academy. No trace memory is left of her in her friends, the student body or the student council. But, she achieved her goal: Anthy, who does remember her, is able to leave Ohtori and goes off to look for Utena herself.

Personality: Utena is a devoted, loyal, noble-hearted girl. She idolizes the prince figure in fairy tales, wanting to be able to save all those who need saving. Outgoing, athletic, and charming, she makes friends easily and would move mountains for them should they ask. Her naiveté and innocence can get her in trouble sometimes, particularly when it comes to trusting people. When betrayed, if given good reason and a little time, she can forgive. She is a fierce fighter and stands up for what she believes is right. Sometimes she is a bit brash and doesn’t fare well with manipulation, preferring to be open, honest, and state what’s on her mind.

Because she was orphaned at a young age, Utena is able to take care of herself, can do all the household chores that parents would usually do. She is quite friendly, preferring to believe in the good in people. She is not the type to over think her actions; she operates more on impulse. She is clearly more of a tomboy, excelling in male dominated areas like sports. She only has a high school education and is of about average intelligence. Whatever she needs to learn she will work hard to understand but can usually pick things up fairly quickly. Failure is never really an option for Utena, while an initial failure may cause Utena to doubt herself, she always manages to come back to her noble self and continue on fighting.

Why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting? Utena is a strong willed girl who will do whatever she can to make the place she’s in a safe place for her friends. Fighting and survival are nothing new to her.

[Screen turns on to reveal a young girl with pink hair and bright blue eyes. She is wearing a dark blue school uniform a bit worse for the wear. Her face has a few bruises. Her eyes are rimmed red from tears. She pulls back at the screen turning on but relaxes and starts her introduction.]

Hi, I’m Utena Tenjou.

[She gives a smile that doesn’t really reach the rest of her and tries to wave. Pain shoots down her arm and she winces, putting her hand back down.]

I just arrived…here and need a little help figuring out where here is. I was a student at Ohtori but nothing here is even close to what Ohtori looks like. I’m not even sure how I got here.

[She gives a quick look around, a bit uneasy in the new surroundings.]

I woke up in this room after-

[Her eyes widen in memory. Her speech becomes faster; the memory has agitated her.]

Has anyone seen Anthy Himemiya? She’s about my age, Indian descent, has glasses and purple hair. And she should have a small monkey with her! Please, if anyone has any information on her please let me know! I need to know she’s okay. The last time I saw her…

[She trails off, her eyes beginning to blur with tears. Her voice becomes a little shaky, the agitation increases.]

Has anyone even heard of Ohtori Academy?! The Rose Bride?! What is the place?!

[The screen shakes as she yells. Holding back sobs; she takes a deep, steadying breath. She pushes her bangs out of her face, wincing in pain again. Her voice has some strength back but it is clear she is still close to a breakdown.]

Please tell me anything you know that might help me find her – Anthy. I, I need to know she is okay. And any help with what here is would be great too. Please!

[Utena drops from view as the screen is pointed towards the ceiling. A hand, purple with bruises and small cuts flashes across the screen. A moment of static and transmission ends.]

3rd person

Utena stepped out the door and once more into this unfamilar world. Treading carefully, she made her way down the streets. Part of her was excited, glad not to see the same blazing white buildings of the Ohtori school. The dark and broken stone made a nice contrast; it felt more alive, more real. Any sunny thoughts that were evoked were soon muted by the pangs of memory. She missed her friends. No one here, so far, had even heard of Ohtori, let alone the secret dueling contests and those that participated. She even thought longingly of Touga's none too subtle advances. She was worried about Himemiya the most though. What had happened to her? If she could only receive some word that she was okay, that she had escaped her coffin and those terrible swords...

How had she survived the swords? The last thing Utena could remember was the pain of the swords piercing her. All those swords - there was no way she could have survived that with only the minor cuts and bruises she woke up with. Her uniform wasn't even that torn. For that she was thankful. She had no other clothes just yet so a uniform full of holes would get her attention she didn't need.

Was this place the end of the world? Had she finally arrived at the place that boasted of the power to revolutionize the world? She cast those thoughts aside, doubting that any place that was like this could be what she was looking for. If she had gotten her wish, she'd be with Himemiya and her friends, away from the strange Ohtori Academy. Well, she mused, at least I'm away. It got that part right.

The thrumming noise of a crowd yanked Utena back from her melancholy. A small square was ahead and a crowd had packed in pretty tight. The throng was about fifty strong, offworlders and natives alike, squashed together intently watching something in the middle. Utena, curiosity getting the better of her, got closer. She had no hope of seeing over the crowd; she tried peering through. Having no luck, she slid between the gaps, negotiating her way towards the front - or at least a view. In the middle were four brightly dressed people. Two were juggling fire close to the audience but the real show was in the center. The two middle performers were juggling, no, throwing knives at each other. Each one aimed a knife at his partner's head, hurled the weapons at the same time and both deftly caught the knife no less than an inch from his nose. One of the fire jugglers moved perpendicular to the knives pathway, the other turning toward his partner, neither stopping the flames' loops. Soon all the players were in place and fire and knives were passing through the same point, the center of the "x", never hitting one another. Utena gasped the first time they did this and clapped her hands in surprise.

The throwing continued for a few minutes until the crowd grew less impressed, oohs and ahhs fading out. The performers noticed and decided that their time was finished. Catching their respective utensils, they gave a preemptive bow and geared up for one final throw. With a grand flourish, they all threw at once, the knives going to their partners, caught as always and the torches reached their destination extinguished. The crowd, Utena included, burst out in uproarious cheers. The performers bowed again, all of their hands surreptitiously pointing towards the hat they had set out for their fee. People came and dropped some money in as they dispersed. As she reached the hat, Utena gave up a couple of the coins she had. One of the performers caught her eye and winked as she placed them in the hat. She smiled.

Here's the wiki for the series. And for Utena herself.
